The "Twisted Sisters" is an exercise group that meets every night, rain or shine, except on Sunday. They are made up of all ages and athletic abilities.
The group was co-founded by Shadyside-native, Melissa Karkowski, who appeared on ABC's "Extreme Weight Loss" earlier this year. As a part of a pay it forward initiative, Melissa and her friend Deanna Merryman started with just a few women in mid-July, but in just one month, the group has grown to over 60 women.
Every night they do different activities to get their heart rates up, get in shape and motivate each other to push themselves. Melissa said it's a great alternative to going to the gym, and it's absolutely free.
"And learning this year what I did on Extreme Weight Loss, and how to lose 142 pounds in a year, and having Deanna be my running coach back here at home, it's possible! Anybody can do it! And for me to keep ahold of it, for Deanna to help me, we decided to pay it forward, and we created our Twisted Sisters group," Melissa said.
Melissa and Deanna encourage anyone who is interested to join them at Fleming Field in Shadyside, or even to start their own chapters in their hometown.
The Twisted Sisters have a class at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., and each class lasts about a half hour. They plan to keep the group going year-round, rain or shine.
