UPDATE: Man Accused in Weekend Bank Robberies Was on Parole for Previous Robberies
The man accused in two bank robberies in the Ohio Valley over the weekend was already on parole for previous robberies at the time of the alleged crimes.
William Joseph McBride Jr., 49, of Columbus, Ohio, allegedly robbed the Wheeling Island and Ohio Valley Plaza WesBanco bank branches on Saturday. McBride allegedly walked into the island branch of the bank just after 11 a.m. Saturday morning, laid a revolver on the counter and demanded money from the teller. He then reportedly fled the scene on foot.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies including the Wheeling Police Department, West Virginia State Police, Ohio County Sheriff's Department, Bridgeport Police and Martins Ferry Police searched the area for McBride with help from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and Wheeling Fire Department. The FBI was also contacted. While the search continued, police were informed that another robbery occurred at the Ohio Valley Plaza branch of the bank in St. Clairsville. Authorities say excellent surveillance video from Pier One Imports and other neighboring businesses showed the license plate of the car that the suspect drove away in after the second robbery.
Police ran the license plates and learned the suspect's name and last known address in Columbus. FBI agents staked out that house and were there when McBride pulled in late Saturday afternoon. They say he was taken into custody peacefully.
He remains in custody in Columbus. There is no word yet on when he will be transported back to the area.
