If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant announced Aug. 28 her office had only proposed a fee change for documents as a way to gather feedback.

According to information from the Secretary of State's Office, notice of the proposed fee change was posted publicly to gather feedback, and after hearing concerns from several businesses, Tennant decided not to implement the proposed fees, which were proposed to take effect no sooner than Sept. 4.

“I answer to the people of West Virginia, and I've taken action to address their concerns,” Tennant said in a prepared statement. “We will not be charging the additional fees.”

According to information from Tennant's office, the fee had been proposed in response to “a large increase in document requests that were taking time away from other important services the office performs for businesses, such as helping businesses file startup documents, filing of thousands of annual reports, implementing new notary laws and outreaching to those notaries and enhancing the online systems to better serve our business community.”

Tennant has directed her office to reevaluate and come up with alternative solutions. According to her office, options currently include limiting the number of requests to which the office can respond within a certain time period.

“Such alternatives will also be posted publicly before implementation to gather input from West Virginians before they are implemented,” according to Tennant's office.

Public information regarding business filings is currently available online for free, and according to information from Tennant's office, that information would have continued to be free under the proposed fee change. Media wouldn't have been charged fees under the proposal either, according to the information.

Filing details available from the Secretary of State's Office for free includes: organization type, effective and filing dates, business class, charter type, termination date and reason, charter county and state, capital stock, number of authorized shares, organization address, listing of officers, annual reports filed and subsidiaries.
