The Hancock County Sheriff's Department is warning residents about individuals attempting to elicit funds illegally through a reoccurring scam.
Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said the sheriff's department received numerous reports of a man claiming to be with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office who gave false information that there was a warrant issued for them for failure to report for jury duty. He said the callers are claiming the individuals have a fine for a specific amount and they will send someone to the house to collect a cash voucher for the payment.
“No court system would notify individuals this way nor would they request payment to be made in this manner,” Fletcher said. “We are urging area residents to take caution and report any calls of this nature to the authorities.”
Fletcher said this is just one of many scams circulating the area where individuals are asked to send money for various purposes. He said a similar scam swept through the area back in June.
Calls can be reported to the Hancock Sheriff's Office at 304-564-4100.
