800 pound Elephant Sculpture Arrives in Wheeling, WV

WHEELING - How often do you get to witness an elephant moving about in downtown Wheeling?

Well that's exactly what many saw as an 800 pound sculpture made its way to its new home at the sculpture garden park at the corner of 11th and Main Streets.

The sculpture is made from recycled equipment from the former Boury's Restaurant.

The piece is a tribute to the elephants being marched across the Wheeling Suspension Bridge 60 years ago when the circus was in town.

"It is a bugle in the air, we hope we can stop, get your attention, and turn down and look at the beautiful waterfront," sculptor Jeffery Forster said.

"I come down here for the festivals every year with my son," Wheeling native, Treasa Lipscomb said. "This is just going to be great for him to see, especially when they get it all done."

The elephant's name will be announced once the donors arrive in town.

It is just one of several animal sculptures that will come to the park, which has been made possible thanks to the City of Wheeling, ReInvent Wheeling, and Flip and Gary West.
