Wheeling Police Department to continue conducting WOLFPACK operations

Posted: Updated:

In just three hours, Wheeling Police handed out 47 citations to people going too fast.

Yesterday, they conducted what's called a ''WOLFPACK'' operation, where an officer is in a specific location shooting a stationary radar.

When someone speeds, the car's description is called out to police cars waiting in the area to make the stop

Three areas were targeted and in several cases -- cars almost went 20 miles per hour OVER the limit.

"I have found it, personally, to be a very effective strategy in curbing excessive speed which is a very high causation factor in a majority of our accidents," Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger told WTRF.

Schwertfeger says they are planning to do more of these operations in the near future.

Fifty-eight citations were issued in all -- 47 for speed, six for cell phone use, four for seatbelt violations, and one for no insurance.
