WHEELING, W.Va -

Sgt. Gregg McKenzie of the Wheeling Police Department is warning residents of a possible scam going on in the Ohio Valley.

Residents in the Woodsdale neighborhood in Wheeling have received calls and messages allegedly from the United States Department of Legal Affairs. The message advised that the resident would be in serious trouble if they didn't call back as soon as possible, to the telephone number provided. According to McKenzie, the number provided traces back to one of three possible California residents. McKenzie says he checked on line and found this to be a known scam.

A statement on the U.S. Department of the Treasury website urges residents to exercise caution:

"These are frauds. Please exercise caution in your dealings with anyone purporting to be a government agency and demanding money or information."

Further information concerning one type of these frauds is available at  http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams
