Students Honor Law Enforcement during Appreciation Day

Posted: Updated:

Students at Our Lady of Peace School showed their gratitude and respect for law enforcement officers Friday morning.

On the eve of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, they honored them with music, prayers and gifts.

Wheeling Police, the Ohio and Marshall County Sheriff's Departments, West Virginia State Police, the US Marshal Service and the FBI showed up to Our Lady of Peace on Friday.

The students honored them with poems and prayers on their behalf.

The law enforcement officers smiled as they were given hand-crafted posters, goodie bags and chocolate handcuffs.

US Attorney Bill Ihlenfeld gave out blue light bulbs.

He asked the students to take them home and have their parents install them on their front porches, for one week.

"And as the police drive by, they'll know that you support them, you appreciate what they do, you realize the risks that they take, and all that they do to keep our community safe," said Ihlenfeld.

Sheriff Kevin Cecil said the blue lights touch the hearts of the men and women in blue.

"It makes a difference that people have you in their thoughts so it has a very intense meaning for us," said Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Cecil.
